Procedure for Selection of Students

Students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.5 for EVANTH courses. Students must submit an application form for Graduation with Distinction to DUS Assistant by the end of the first week of classes of the student’s next-to-last semester (e.g., beginning of fall semester for May graduates).

The application consists of a brief description (1-2 paragraph) of the honors project, the names of the faculty comprising the examination committee (see below), and the signature of the student’s faculty mentor.

Expected Product

A paper based on significant independent research or scholarship is expected.

Evaluative Body

An examination committee consisting of three faculty members, at least two of whom are in Evolutionary Anthropology.

Evaluative Procedure

An oral examination is given on the paper. Students are encouraged to complete their written thesis by the beginning of April and to sit for their thesis defense by mid-April. Specific deadlines vary from year to year and can be obtained from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. 

Levels of Distinction

One level: Distinction.

Special Courses, Other Activities Required, Comments

The paper is normally developed in independent studies (e.g., EVANTH 393 or 495S) over the two senior semesters.
