Major in Evolutionary Anthropology, Minors in Global Health and Chemistry

Hello, my name is Florine Lijesen, and I am majoring in Evolutionary Anthropology with a minor in Global Health and Chemistry. After Duke I plan to attend medical school, as I am very interested in oncology and orthopedics. Traveling is one of my passions and I like experiencing new cultures. This past summer I had the opportunity to shadow physicians in both the Netherlands and England, which further fueled my intrigue for medicine. Outside of school I am a member of the varsity women's rowing team as well as the collegiate athlete pre-medical experience (CAPE) Program. In my free time, I love trying new coffee shops, cooking, traveling, reading, and enjoying the outdoors.

Favorite Class: My favorite class at Duke was EVANTH 285: Evolutionary Medicine and Global Health. It was so interesting to learn about how our evolutionary history is related to modern health problems like cancer, diabetes, and mental health. I also really enjoyed learning about the different stages of human life and the unique vulnerabilities and adaptations that make us human. It was a very engaging class that covered a wide range of topics, I highly recommend taking this class!
